Balancing the 3 main Prana Vayus
What Are the Prana Vayus?
Prana is life force, the subtle energy that animates your breath, thoughts, digestion, and vitality.
Vayu means “wind” or “movement.”
The Prana Vayus describe the five ways energy moves inside your body.
Today, we focus on three of the most influential:
- Prana Vayu - the upward, receiving current
- Apana Vayu - the downward, releasing current
- Samana Vayu - the integrating, balancing current
When these three are balanced:
• You feel steady.
• Clear.
• Grounded.
• Energised, but not scattered.
When they are not:
• Energy rises into the head.
• You feel anxious or depleted.
• Or heavy and stuck.
PRANA VAYU
Direction: Upward
Location: Heart & lungs
Quality: Expansion / Inspiration
Prana Vayu governs how you receive life.
It moves energy upward from the breath into the heart and mind.
Balanced Prana feels:
• Open
• Inspired
• Clear
• Compassionate
Imbalanced Prana feels:
• Scattered
• Anxious
• Overthinking
• Shallow breathing
APANA VAYU
Direction: Downward
Location: Pelvis & lower belly
Quality: Grounding / Elimination
Apana governs release.
It helps you let go of waste, toxins, emotions, and mental impressions.
Balanced Apana feels:
• Stable
• Grounded
• Safe
• Clear in boundaries
Imbalanced Apana feels:
• Unsettled
• Heavy
• Low mood
• Digestive stagnation
SAMANA VAYU
Direction: Inward (toward center)
Location: Navel
Quality: Integration / Assimilation
Samana is the mediator. It balances the upward and downward currents. It digests food and experiences.
Balanced Samana feels:
• Focused
• Steady
• Strong digestion
• Clear decision-making
Imbalanced Samana feels:
• Overwhelm
• Poor digestion
• Mental overload
• Difficulty integrating learning
