Linga Mudra: A Warming Practice to Awaken Inner Power
Aug 13, 2026In yoga, some practices help us soften. Others help us awaken.
Linga Mudra is a warming and activating hand gesture traditionally associated with the fire element, vitality and transformation. It can be especially supportive when your energy feels cold, heavy, sluggish or stagnant. There is a whole philosophy around this mudra which we discuss in our Buddhi Light Membership inside Buddhi Sangha.
In this season of Activate Your Inner Power (Our Spring Sadhana inside Buddhi Sangha), we are working with practices that help us clear winter heaviness, gather our energy back from where it has been scattered and move into spring with greater purpose and vitality.
Not by pushing harder or burning through our remaining reserves, but by cultivating a steady inner fire, enough energy to ignite our internal flame, clarity and meaningful change without burning us out.
Linga Mudra can support this beautifully.
Formed by interlacing the fingers and extending your left thumb upward, this mudra creates a strong, contained energetic circuit. When held at the solar center, it directs awareness towards agni the inner fire traditionally associated with digestion, transformation, vitality and purposeful action.
WHAT THIS MUDRA SUPPORTS
- warmth and vitality
- movement through heaviness and stagnation
- connection to the solar center
- focused, purposeful energy
- awareness of digestive fire and activation of metabolism
- release mucuous and shift the onset of a cold
- reduce the feeling of being cold but only should be used as a short term memory
Important Practice Note (Contraindications and cautions)
Linga Mudra and Breath of Fire are heating practices. Practice on an empty stomach and stop if you experience dizziness, strain, overheating, discomfort, heat, or scratching in the throat.
This practice is not suitable for those who are pregnant, have a fever or acute illness, or have active gastrointestinal upset, a hernia, recent abdominal or pelvic surgery, uncontrolled blood-pressure concerns, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, or retinal conditions.
When Breath of Fire is not appropriate, you can still practice the mudra gently with your natural breath, but please seek the advice of a teacher or Doctor where appropriate if unsure or if you have any health concerns.
How to Practise Linga Mudra
Step 1: Set up your seat
Sit comfortably on the floor, on a bolster or towards the front of a chair.
Feel your sit bones grounded beneath you. Lengthen naturally through the spine and soften your shoulders, jaw and throat. Take three slow breaths.
On each exhale, feel yourself settling down through the belly and pelvis while maintaining space through the center of the body.
Step 2: Form the mudra
In the version we practise inside Buddhi Sangha:
- Bring both hands together in front of you.
- Interlace the fingers so the little finger of the left hand rests at the bottom.
- Extend the left thumb straight upward.
- Allow the right thumb and index finger to gently encircle and support the base of the left thumb.
- Hold the hands in front of the solar plexus or navel center.
Let the fingers feel connected and contained, without gripping so tightly that tension moves into the wrists, shoulders or jaw.
Step 3: Connect with your inner fire
- Bring your awareness to the upright thumb. Imagine it as a small, steady flame rising from your thumb tip. Not a fire that consumes your energy, but one that brings warmth, clarity and direction.
- Breathe naturally through the nose for several rounds. As you inhale, feel energy gathering at the centerline. As you exhale, feel the flame becoming steady and bright and the warmth starting to rise
Step 4: Add breath of fire
You may remain with a natural breath and hold the mudra for 2–5 minutes.
For a more activating practice, those already familiar with Breath of Fire may add two or three short rounds.
Exhale actively through the nose as you gently draw the navel towards the spine. Then release the abdomen and allow the inhalation to return passively.
The focus is on the exhale. The inhale arises naturally.
Continue at your own comfortable pace for 20–30 seconds, then return to your natural breath and rest before beginning another round. This active-exhale, passive-inhale pattern is characteristic of Kapalabhati-style breathing.
Step 5: Close
Release the mudra and rest your hands on your thighs. Allow your breath to return completely to its natural rhythm for 30–60 seconds.
Notice:
- Is there warmth through your hands or solar centre?
- Does your breath feel clearer or more spacious?
- Do you feel heavy or light in in the body and mind?
Rather than searching for a dramatic result, become quiet enough to notice the subtle shift.
When to use it
Linga Mudra can be especially supportive:
- on cold mornings
- during the transition from winter into spring
- when your energy feels dull, heavy or stagnant
- when you feel disconnected from your center
- before an activating asana or pranayama or kriya practice
- when you want to place your energy behind a clear intention that requires action
- when you feel chilly and want to cultivate warmth
Because this mudra increases the fire element, it is best used intentionally and for short periods rather than practiced continuously.
Never practice it when you have a fever or already feel overheated.
